Two Out of Three

Well, my time at Stanford has come to an end. I am now a full-time resident of the Redwood Center for Theoretical Neuroscience at UC Berkeley. The original plan included a 3 year run at Stanford, but, for reasons good and bad, I can now focus on my core research at Redwood for the next year. I wonder how that year will go?

Speaking to Googlers

Last month I visited Google to present some of my research. For the last year and a half, I'd taken a break from public presentations, but it seemed like time to return. Since Google puts all of its tech talks on U-Tube, my return to public presentation seems to be very public. It's availible on my publications page.

On the shores of Ithaca

A beautiful sunny day welcomes me back to Berkeley and the embrace of Thumper and my love. I feel like I'll be jet-lagged for weeks, but life sweetens.

Painful Mistakes

So it turns out the spa made some mistakes with my travel reservations. Pain and aggravation aside, hopefully all this means is that I'll be delayed a day getting home. For a moment it seemed like it might be catastrophic -- it should have been handled two days ago rather than this morning -- but I was able to squeeze in despite the delay. Now I'm on stand by.

With any luck, home to my family tomorrow...

IBM

Down at the Almaden Research Center, IMB's research complex in San Jose, there is a group doing amazing work simulating entire components of rat brains on their supercomputers. This Cognitive Computing center has been one of the sexier projects in computational neuroscience for some time.

If all works out, I'll be visiting them at the end of the month to present my research. They can talk rat brains and I'll talk mammal ears; hopefully we can meet somewhere in the middle. It should be enormously productuve fun.

Almost Home

I wandered around the grounds today. From the 7th floor, the city spreads out around us. Living cities are beautiful, and I'm quite find of this one.

Tomorrow will take me home. I miss Thumper. I miss my love. It has been a wonderful week here, but even holidays tire.

Buttons? We don't need no stinking buttons!

My "spa" week continues. The service has been friendly and generally quite attentive. The strain of the first day's exercises have reduced to little more that an occasional ache -- amazing given my expectations going in. The near constant massages help. I've even been able to do little research.

Of course, no "vacation" is perfect. The food leaves a lot to be desired; everything actually. And I've been struck in front of my computer most of the time, answering emails and reading papers (and occasionally watching Family Guy).

The worst part is being away from Thumper. I want to be back home with him and Mem. Soon...

Until then, I'll continue to make the most of my time. For example, now I'll be taking a nap.
